What Does It Mean to Have a Purpose?
What does it mean for a species to have a purpose? Is that different from the purpose of an individual? And is purpose something that already exists, or something we create for ourselves? These were some of the questions explored in a recent Philosophy for Children session at Sunnyside, using the story Ephemere.

Reimagining Our Neighbourhoods: A Climate Resilience Project by Our High Schoolers
Namma Chennai: Reimagining Our Neighbourhoods presents the work of our High School learners at Sunnyside as part of a Localised Climate Resilience learning module facilitated by Aram Thinai. While the module itself unfolded over a few months, for our learners, this work was really the culmination of a learning journey that began nearly three years ago, when they were in Middle School. Over these years, they have engaged with climate change and environmental issues in many dif

When Should We Not Use Voting to Decide?
In light of Independence Day, we began with a question: In which situations should we not use voting as a means to decide? We started by asking the children what Independence Day signifies. They spoke about British rule and India gaining freedom. We then asked what happened after British rule. One of the responses was that we began choosing our rulers through voting. This took us into a conversation about voting itself. Voting is one way of making decisions collectively. It a

When can we say that two things are the same?
Our Philosophy for Children (P4C) session began with a deceptively simple question: When can we say that two things are the same? The children brought pairs of objects they considered identical; pencils, coins, pins, toys, paper cups and sticky notes and we began by asking what exactly made each pair “the same.”

What Does It Mean to Be Brave?
Our Philosophy for Children (P4C) session began with a simple prompt: “To be brave is to ______.” The children spoke about facing fears, believing in oneself, taking risks, helping others, speaking the truth and doing difficult things. But very quickly, we realised that defining bravery was not quite so simple.

Yes, We Do Academics, Just Not the Usual Way
Sunnyside may come across like a place where children do a lot of outdoor learning , more exploration and fun stuff. Naturally, questions may pop up in a parent's mind “But what about academics? Do they think it is important or do they completely ignore it ? “

Wood you build it?
It all began rather simply with Abdullah, one of our senior high schoolers, a handful of planks, and a small idea that children could make real things with their own hands. Abdullah has always been a tinkerer; fixing cars, taking apart computers, and figuring out how things work just for the fun of it. Carpentry was one more thing that caught his curiosity, and soon he found himself spending hours experimenting with wood, tools, and design and loving every bit of the process.

FROM PENCIL STROKES TO PERSPECTIVES
Every journey begins with a single step—or in our case, a single pencil line. What started as a quiet exploration of pencil shading soon unfolded into a rich, layered journey through the many mediums and methods of visual art. It has been as much about discovery as it has been about discipline.
